Mais tarde, arrepende-se e segue pelo caminho tomado pelos Magos levando um presente para Jesus, mas não conseguiu encontrá-lo e decidiu parar em todas as casas para dar doces para todas as crianças. Desde então, a Befana passou a girar o mundo dando presentes a todas as crianças.
A data é aguardada com ansiedade pelas crianças, a tradição popular diz que é fundamental deixar a janela aberta, com uma meia vazia, para que a velhinha possa encher de doces e caramelos as meias das crianças que se comportaram bem no ano anterior, e aquelas que foram travessas e malvadas ganham um pedaço de carvão.
